With the aim of blocking and preventing foreign users to access iPlayer illegally, the BBC is actively taking some strict and stringent measures of blocking VPN services to discourage the illegal and unauthorized usage of its immensely popular iPlayer service. These measures were basically adopted todata:text/mce-internal,content,d%20t curb the iPlayer pirates in places outside UK. These iPlayer pirates are able to access the iPlayer without any permission and without paying for a license, by the use of VPN and some best proxy servers. But, while aiming at reducing the illegal usage, the BBC has been blocking many UK citizens, who have legitimate license to access the iPlayer. These users are being forced to give up on their choice of safe Internet browsing, in order to access the service.

BBC has found great success with its online service – the iPlayer. Though it was designed and intended only for the viewers in UK, iPlayer is immensely popular not just in UK, but even outside. The viewers in the UK are required to pay a fixed and compulsory TV license to access the service. But, the overseas users generally access it through the use of VPN and some popular and best proxy servers. Many reports have suggested that millions of users access the iPlayer from outside UK through the use of VPNs. A VPN basically allows a computer to receive and send information across public and shared networks, very much like the internet itself. VPN users get the functionality and security of a private network through the use of a virtual point to point connection. A virtual tunnel is created between the user and the site or service he wants to access. This virtual tunnel allows the user to access the site or service without the ISP knowing the location of the user. A good, perhaps the best proxy server does a similar thing.

But, recently various VPN users are reporting that they are unable to access the iPlayer through their VPN servers that are UK based. They receive a notice on the screen which says that the BBC iPlayer programs can be viewed only in UK. This step of blocking the VPN was taken to curb the illegal access of the service by expats and foreigners by use of best proxy servers. Though it has been successful in doing that, this strict measure has widely effected the citizens of UK, who regularly pay their license and use a VPN for secure and safe Internet surfing. These users need to disconnect the VPN; otherwise they are denied access to the iPlayer.

Access-deniedOn investigation, TF was informed by the BBC that the ban of the VPN ban was required to justify the terms of use of the service and to reduce the number of increasing illegal accesses. The company is making efforts to keep the VPN option open for schools and companies. The individual and regular users of iPlayer are required to disconnect the VPN service, so that they can access the iPlayer. The service is available in UK without the use of VPN, but the banning of VPN access to iPlayer denies the users to access the internet the way they want to. A user wants to have the ultimate and final choice in the way he views the web, but this ban puts a threat on such a choice. These users have definitely written complaints to the BBC, but to no avail. A potential threat to the VPN service providers should not be ignored. They have been looking for options to overcome this ban. Many of them aim at coming up with powerful and best proxy servers to find an alternative. Many solutions are slowly coming up. Some of the best proxy server and VPN service providers claim to have come with temporary solutions to this problem. One of them has offered its customers the best proxy server, a UK based IP address.

Though the BBC does admit that this stringent measure will affect the license payers of UK, who are conscious about internet security and privacy, it is unable to separate the legal and illegal VPN accesses. This is because their database gives them only an approximate area location and not the proper location of the end user.

The users and providers of best proxy server and VPN believe that this step taken by the BBC will only hamper its credibility and result in a loss of many license paying legitimate users because even they would look at other options now. If they have an access to an easy to use and best proxy server, why would they want to pay for the service? They will happily access any service through the best proxy server.
